COMMUNITY HERBALIST PROGRAM

Expand your knowledge of medicinal herbs to help family and friends!

The Community Herbalist is a program that introduces students to the incredible world of plants and their medicinal uses. This program provides a practical study of herbalism through an in depth study of over 100 medicinal plants, plant cultivation and wild harvesting,as well as the study of herbal medicine for the body systems.  Graduates can use knowledge and experience gained to assist family and friends in holistic health applications, work in the health and wellness retail sector, grow and maintain herbal gardens, or create herbal preparation.

 

Curriculum

Below are the courses that comprise the Community Herbalist Certificate Program. Successful completion of all components is necessary for graduation with a Community Herbalist Certificate.

Wild Study Level One

In level one of the program, you will learn the basics of herbalism, wild-crafting, botany and medicine making.  Along with the foundation levels of the program we will delve deep into the study of 19 plants and trees that grow abundantly.

Wild Study Level Two

In level two of the program, you will build on your knowledge from level one by studying more complex concepts such as the chemical constituents of plants along with additional medicine making techniques as well as creating herb formulas.  Level two will cover study of 31 plants and trees that grow abundantly.

Cultivate Study Level One

In level one of the program, you will learn the basics of herb gardening including designing & planning, soil health, no-till farming methods, plant life cycles and seed germination methods.  Along with the gardening portion of the program we will delve deep into the study of 25 plants that are typically cultivated in our area.

Cultivate Study Level Two

In level two of the program, you will build on your gardening knowledge from level one by studying more complex concepts such as planting according to a biodynamic calendar, companion planting, and pest & disease management.  Along with the gardening portion of the program we will delve deep into the study of 25 plants that are typically cultivated in our area.

Herbal Medicine for the Body Systems

This course is an exploration into the world of herbal medicine as it relates to each of our body systems.  You will receive an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the body.  For each body system, you will learn how to choose herbs that will nourish, strengthen, tone and balance these systems.   For each herb you will be given the delivery methods, dosages, and contraindications.  This is where your knowledge of the herbs studied in the Wild and Cultivate studies will be used in practical applications.

Holistic Nutrition

An overview of the field of nutrition and an understanding of the link between nutrition and preventive medicine. The course explains the role of macro & micro nutrients as well as vitamins and minerals in the body and how these can be obtained through food and herbs.  This course will include recipes for maintaining a healthy, happy body.

Business Basics

This course will prepare you for entering the world of entrepreneurship!  You will learn the basics of accounting, how to create a website, how to market your business, product creation, market research, government regulations, how to file your taxes, and more.

Bach Flower Remedies & Flower Essences

In this course you will learn about Dr. Edward Bach and the Bach Flower Remedies. The Bach system is made up of 38 healing plants addressing the different states of mind. The remedies help the physical body to gain strength and assist the mind to become calm, widen its outlook and strive towards perfection, thus bringing peace and harmony to the whole personality. You will also learn about other flower essences uses as well as how to make them yourself.

Hydrosols

In this course you will  learn the many ways to incorporate hydrosols into your daily life and/or healing practice—be it aromatherapy or herbal medicine. You will learn how to distill as well as how to prepare a wide range of hydrosol recipes for healing, cosmetic and culinary uses.

Herbal Consultations

In this course you will learn the best practices for an herbal consultation.  A consultation is is an opportunity for your client to sit down in a relaxed and supportive environment to have an in-depth conversation about their health concerns. It is is important to be able to provide that supportive environment for your client, this can be done through a comprehensive client intake form, knowing the right questions to ask and how to really listen to your client not only through their voice but their body language as well.  You will also learn how to interpret their intake form and create a holistic plan for them.  We will also cover follow-ups and referrals.

Herbalism for Dogs & Cats 101

In this course you will the basics of herbalism for dogs & cats.  Herbs can be incorporated into our pets everyday lives as preventatives to strengthen their immune system or they can be used when acute symptoms are present.  This course will cover the everyday herbs and also address a number of situations where herbs can be a great ally to your pets.

Biodynamics 101

In this course we will look at cosmic influences, especially moon rhythms and how they affect plants. We’ll also learn how to use a biodynamic planting calendar and create the biodynamic preparations. We will learn more about the basis of Biodynamic Agriculture which aims to be a human service towards healing the earth. It is a type of organic agriculture that strives to create a diverse and balanced ‘farm organism’ that provides for itself. The soil is enlivened and replenished through the use of special homeopatic medicines used in compost making and directly on the earth or plants. Food and herbs taken from such enlivened soil helps our health, thinking, and learning.

Farm Apprenticeship

If you are interested in starting your own herb farm or just love getting your hands in the dirt than this elective is for you!  You will come to the farm during the spring, summer and fall to experience all seasons of the farm life.  You will start seeds, transplant, harvest, and create medicine.  You will participate with any projects happening on the farm while you are there/  You will gain practical applications of permaculture and biodynamic practices.  There will also be time for you to explore in the forest!

In the Kitchen

In this course you will learn how to incorporate herbs into your everyday cooking.  We will discuss fermentation, bone broths, and preservation methods.  You will learn the health benefits of spices and how to use them in your dishes.  You will receive over 50 recipes and even more inspiration.  A majority of the recipes will be gluten and dairy free. Take your cooking to a whole new level!
